Iss a prolific multidisciplinary artist known for his minimal, spontaneous and sociopolitical street-based works. His witty, smart and critical approach towards society and environments makes him one of the few Italian names active in this specific branch of public art (unsanctioned interventions). Vlady was born in Catania in the mid ‘70s to a Sicilian mother and an Istrian exiled father. Raised in a difficult neighbourhood, he quickly learned how to find his way. Shortly after high school (State Institute of Art), Vlady headed to Milan to study at Brera’s Art Academy. Following a degree in fine art, disillusioned and uninterested in an artistic career, he left Italy for Ireland (2003). In 2008, Vlady returned to his hometown and here significantly increased his outdoor interventions. With the complicity of the economic crisis, in one of the most deprived areas in Italy’s south, Vlady challenged his own society with an unprecedented, sarcastic, sharp, guerrilla activism. He quickly became a prominent figure in the local street art scene - very poor at that time. More recently, Vlady’s approach has turned more conceptual and communicative - the use of text has increased notably. There is a peculiar blend of conflicting feelings in his works: a sort of joyful melancholy, a bittersweet taste, a glorious decay, a self-declaration of existence. Photography helped his intangible (and ephemeral) production to reach a new audience; travelling has consolidated his trust in the "low tech" and a philosophy of improvisation is behind most of his production. Between 2012 and 2013 we see a number of performing acts in which the public starts to play an active role. It is a combination of situationism and interventionism within the new era of urban arts. Vlady has gained a national and international reputation in urban/public art, resulting in publications, articles, interviews, exhibitions and invitations in Italy and abroad. Today he lives in Stockholm, Sweden (2018).
